Choosing The Name
Hello to those reading! I’m so glad you’re here.
I’m Sydney, the heart behind Made For This Counseling. Typing that sentence still feels surreal and writing a blog post is definitely out of my comfort zone, if I’m being completely honest. Nonetheless, I am excited and grateful for this next chapter as a therapist and hope that these blog posts help you get to know me as a person and therapist, and can be a space to connect and discuss all things therapy and mental health.
Opening my own practice was not in the forefront of my brain a year ago. It was always a goal I had for the future, but wasn't something I thought was possible at this point in my career as a therapist. Since graduating with my masters of science in professional counseling I have worked in different group practices that were such great experiences and have helped me develop and grow into the therapist I am today. Ultimately, I decided to branch off on my own as it allows me to be more aligned with my values as a therapist, promote my services and work in an authentic way, and approach therapy utilizing evidence-based treatments that I feel best fit my client’s needs.
I feel so fortunate to have been able to start this practice and I’m beyond grateful for the encouragement and support I have had throughout this process. It took a lot of hard work and continues to be a work in progress as I am navigating all of what owning a practice entails, but I knew from the very beginning that the name of my practice was important to me. I wanted the name of my practice to not only be meaningful to me, but also something that would resonate with others.
Over many long days, with my mind spiraling, I had created quite a long list of “therapy” words and phrases for potential name ideas. Ideas that aligned with who I am as a therapist as well as many other ideas that had already been used. I wasn’t necessarily sold on any, so I reached out to my very good friend, who is an excellent writer, and asked her for some inspiration. She so kindly gave me a list of names she had come up with, and low and behold “Made For This Counseling” was one of them. It was such a cool experience having someone so close to me be a part of this process. When finally trying to make a decision, it was a name I kept coming back to and made me feel empowered when I would repeat it out loud.
To me, “Made For This” conveys strength. That we can get through this. That we have the capability, strength, and resilience to overcome challenges, grow, and navigate life’s journey. Whether clients believe that when they first enter my office or not, I do my darn best to get them to a place where they do. My hope is that through my work with clients they feel empowered and confident to work through, process, and understand themselves on a deeper level to be able to handle whatever comes their way.
I know starting therapy can feel daunting and overwhelming but if you are thinking of starting therapy or re-starting, I encourage you to take that step and invest in something that can enhance your overall well-being. More blog posts to come and thanks for reading!
As always,
You’re Made For This
